    Cabbage, stuffed, sweet + sour

    1 jar or can sauerkraut, well drained
    1 small onion, chopped and sauteed
    2 Tablespoons brown sugar or 1 small jar applesauce
    1 1/2 cups water
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    2 Tablespoons butter
    1/2 cup uncooked regular, not instant, rice
    1 head cabbage
    1 pound ground beef
    1/2 pound ground pork
    2 slices crustless white bread
    1/2 cup milk
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    garlic
    1 onion, chopped
    for the sauce:
    1, 10 3/4 ounce can tomato soup
    1, 16 ounce can stewed tomatoes
    2 Tablespoons lemon juice
    2 Tablespoons brown sugar

    Mix sauerkraut, sauteed onion and brown sugar.
    In saucepan, bring water, 1/4 teaspoon salt and butter to boil.
    Add rice, remove from heat and cover. Let stand 30 minutes.
    Meanwhile, core and steam cabbage just until leaves are no longer crisp.
    Mix together beef, pork, bread, milk, egg, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, garlic
    and chopped onion.
    Add rice to meat mixture.
    Roll up cabbage leaves with some meat mixture inside.
    Shred remaining cabbage.
    Lay shredded cabbage and some of the sauerkraut mixture on the bottom
    of the baking pan.
    Layer cabbage rolls and sauerkraut mixture.
    Mix together sauce ingredients and pour over all.
    Bake covered for about 1 1/2 hours in 350 degree F. oven.
    Uncover and bake another 30 minutes or until done.
