Spiced Apple Upside Down Cake

1/4 c. butter (1/2 stick)
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1 (14 oz) jar spiced apple rings, drained
1/2 of a pkg of yellow cake mix
2/3 c. water
1 egg
sweetened whipped cream or ice cream


Recipe



Heat oven to 350ºF.

In oven, melt butter in baking pan, 8 x 8 x 2 inch or 9 x 9 x2 inch. Sprinkle brown sugar on butter. Cut apple rings into halves and arrange on brown sugar. In small mixer bowl, blend cake mix, water, and egg on low speed 1/2 minute, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour onto fruit.

Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Invert onto serving plate; leave pan over cake a few minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream.
