    5 cups all-purpose flour
    1 Tablespoon plus 1 tsp. cream of tartar
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. salt
    2 cups vegetable shortening
    2 cups granulated sugar
    4 large eggs
    2 tsp. vanilla extract
    Granulated sugar

    Recipe



    Combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.

    In a large bowl, cream the vegetable shortening and sugar. Beat in the eggs. Beat in the vanilla extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Cover and chill for 8 hours or overnight.

    Preheat oven to 375*. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.

    Pinch off walnut-sized pieces of dough and roll into balls. Place the balls 1-1/2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Dip the bottom of a glass in water and then in granulated sugar, and press to flatten each ball to a thickness of 1/4 inch.

    Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly colored. Transfer to wire racks to cool.

    Makes 5 to 6 dozen.
