To get rid of the black or gray stains caused by mildew, try moistening the
stained area with lemon juice and salt, then drying the fabric in the sun.
If this doesn't work, sponge the stain with hydrogen peroxide and sun-dry it.
To remove mildew from a quilt, wash the piece gently in lukewarm water to
which you've added a little Orvus--an animal shampoo available from feed
stores and veterinarians (and quilt shops). Do this is a clean bathtub
rather than in the washing machine, where the quilt is likely to get balled
and knotted. Rinse the piece and lay it outside for a few hours on a dry
day. It's best to put it in the sun, mildew's worst enemy, but leave it
there only until it's dry. Remember that sunlight can fade fabric if it's
left too long in the sun.
