    Maple Syrup Doughnuts

    List of Ingredients




    1 cup maple syrup
    2/3 cup soured milk or buttermilk
    2 eggs
    1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
    4 cups (about) sifted all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    Vegetable oil for deep frying

    Recipe



    In large bowl, combine maple syrup, milk, eggs and shortening. Beat
    well.

    Add remaining ingredients except oil; mix until a soft dough forms.
    Turn dough out onto floured surface and pat to 1/2-inch thickness.
    Cut with doughnut cutter into rounds.

    In large deep saucepan, heat 2 to 3 inches oil to 375° F on deep fat
    thermometer.

    Fry doughnuts, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides,
    turning once. Drain on paper towels.

    Makes about 2 dozen.
