    2 cups flour
    1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    3 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp soda
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 1/4 cups milk
    3 eggs
    1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips, finely chopped
    1 1/2 tsp vanilla
    Butterscotch Filling (recipe follows)
    1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
    Chocolate Chip Glaze (recipe follows)

    Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour 2 round layer
    pans, 8 or 9 inches. Measure all the ingredients,
    except the filling, walnuts, and glaze into a large
    mixer bowl. Blend for 1/2 minute on low speed,
    scraping the bowl constantly. Beat for 3 minutes on
    high speed, scraping the bowl occasionally. Pour into
    the prepared pans. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until
    a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out
    clean. Cool completely. Fill the layers with the
    Butterscotch Filling and sprinkle the nuts over the
    filling. Spread the Chocolate Chip Glaze over the top
    of the cake. Allow the glaze to drizzle down the
    sides.

    Butterscotch Filling

    1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
    1/4 cup cornstarch
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/2 cup water
    1 tbsp butter

    Stir together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Stir in
    the water. Cook, stirring constantly, until the
    mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir for 1
    minute. Blend in the butter. Cool.

    Chocolate Chip Glaze

    1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
    2 tbsp butter
    1 tbsp light corn syrup

    Heat all the ingredients over low heat, stirring
    constantly, until the chocolate is melted. Cool slightly.
