    List of Ingredients




    3 cups sifted cake flour
    2 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp salt
    1 cup butter, softened
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1 cup brown sugar
    3 eggs
    4 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted
    2 tsp vanilla
    2 cups buttermilk

    Chocolate Frosting:
    3/4 cup butter, softened
    5 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted
    3 tsp vanilla
    5 tbsp milk
    6 cups powdered sugar, sifted
    Sliced almonds, for garnish, optional ( I use a combination of almonds and
    chocolate shavings)

    Sift flour with baking soda and salt. Set aside.

    Cream butter with sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs, melted chocolate
    and vanilla, beating well.

    Mix in the buttermilk and flour mixture, alternating until mixture is light
    and fluffy.

    Grease and flour three 9 inch pans. Pour batter evenly among pans.

    Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean.

    Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans. Cool completely before frosting.

    Cream butter for frosting with melted chocolate and vanilla. Add milk and
    powdered sugar alternately, beating until frosting is creamy.

    Frost between layers and top and sides of cake, smoothing surface.

    Sprinkle sliced almonds over top rim of cake, if desired.
