    THE MAMA'S COOKBOOK - Mrs. P. F. Hudson

    List of Ingredients




    1/2 cup butter or crisco
    2 cups brown sugar
    2 eggs
    2 1/4 cup best cake flour (plain)
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 cup of sour milk
    1/2 cup boiling water
    1 tsp. soda
    1 1/2 or 2 squares melted chocolate or 1/2 cup cocoa
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 tsp. baking powder

    Cream shortening, add 1 cup sugar gradually, creaming thoroughly.

    Beat eggs until light. Add other cup sugar to the eggs. Add egg mixture to creamed mixture. Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt. Sift Three times. Then add to first mixture alternating with sour milk, beating hard after each addition of flour and milk. Put soda in boiling water; add chocolate or cocoa and vanilla.

    Bake in 2 layers, 325 F. Use white or chocolate frosting.
