    The red spots on this index card make it so pretty.....it's so worn and brown because of the age, the red spots pretty it up!


    List of Ingredients


    • 1/2 cup Crisco
    • 1 1/2 cup sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 1/4 cup red food coloring
    • 2 Tablespoon cocoa
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 2 1/4 cup cake flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 Tablespoon vinegar
    • ICING
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 3 Tablespoons flour
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 2 sticks butter


    Instructions


    1. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs.
    2. Make a paste of cocoa and coloring.
    3. Add to mix.
    4. Add buttermilk, salt and flour alternately.
    5. Add vanilla, soda, and vinegar.
    6. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in 2 - 9 inch pans.
    7. Cool.
    8. ICING
    9. Cook flour and mild until thick, then set aside to cool.
    10. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, add vanilla.
    11. Blend in mixture with cool flour paste then frost.
    12. Enough for 2 9" layers.


    Final Comments


    I had lost this recipe for a long time. I tried others, but they never lived up to this one! In summer, keep refrigerated, the icing has a tendency to melt because of the butter.
