    Angel Biscuits

    Source of Recipe

This comes from my father's family.

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 packages active dry yeast
    • 1/4 cup warm water
    • 2 cups warm buttermilk, 110-115 degrees
    • 5 cups flour
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 tablespoon salt
    • 1 cup shortening or melted butter

    Instructions

    1. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in buttermilk, set aside.
    2. In large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles course meal. Stir in yeast/buttermilk mixture and mix well.
    3. Turn onto a lightly floured surface, knead lightly 3-4 times. Roll to a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter.
    4. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 1/2 hours.
    5. Bake at 450 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Lightly brush tops with melted butter.
    6. Yields about 2 1/2 dozen biscuits.
