Dad's Apple Pie

- 8 medium sized pippin apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 9-inch unbaked pie shell
- Crumb Topping:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/4 cup butter
Instructions
- Peel, core and cut apples into 1/2 inch slices (approx. 8 cups.)
- Combine sugar, flour and spices; mix well with the apple slices, then evely mound mixture in prepared pie crust.
- Prepare crumb topping by mixing sugar and flour, then cut in butter until mixture resembles course crumbs. Pat evenly over the top of apples.
- Slip pie into a large paper bag; fold bag opening over and secure with paper clips. Place on a rimmed baking pan and bake in a 425 degree oven for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until apples are fork tender.
- Slit bag and place pie on a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
