    Spiced Ale and Gingerbread

    For the gingerbread
    5 oz. butter
    1 teaspoonful ginger
    6 oz. sugar
    6 oz. flour
    6 oz. treacle

    Recipe



    Rub butter into flour, and add sugar and ginger. Warm the treacle and
    mix in well. Drop small pieces on a well-greased tin and bake in a
    moderate oven for 30-40 minutes.

    For the spiced ale
    1 quart ale
    A little mixed spice
    1 teaspoonful nutmeg
    4 cloves
    2 apples
    1 teaspoonful sugar

    Heat the ale very slowly until very hot, but on no account must it boil.
    Cut up the apples in slices and serve hot with a slice of apple floating
    in the glass or tankard.
