1 lb. ground round
16 oz. can tomato sauce
6 oz. can tomato paste
1 green pepper, chopped
1 med. onion, chopped
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tbsp. garlic salt
Salt to taste
Chili powder to taste
1 to 2 (16 oz.) cans dark red kidney beansRecipe
Mix tomato sauce, tomato paste and sugar in pan. Break beef in small pieces into the sauce and simmer slowly until the beef if separated. (Do not brown the beef first. The meat looses some of it's flavor in the browning process.) Stir often. Add green pepper, onion, bay leaf, garlic salt, salt and chili powder. Cook 1 hour. Add beans. Heat through. Serves 5.
Note: This is the recipe that was made annually in great quantities and served at the January chili supper for years and years. It is the recipe of Isabel Carlson, Kathy Cook's mother.
