    2 medium onions, chopped
    2 carrots, diced
    1 stalk celery, chopped
    1 green bell pepper, chopped
    4 potatoes, diced
    1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes

    Prepare all vegetables by chopping into small pieces. Place them into a 4 quart Dutch oven. Add:
    2 tbsp. instant beef bouillon
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. black pepper
    1/4 cup raw rice*

    Cover with 2 quarts water.
    Cover and simmer 1-2 hours.
    Add more water, if needed, and:
    crumbled ground chuck

    Simmer 15 minutes more.
    *If instant rice is used, then add it when you add hamburger.

    Batterway Rolls

    1 1/2 cups warm water
    2 pkgs. rapid rise yeast
    4 cups flour, divided
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    1/3 cup soft shortening
    1 egg

    Pour warm water into a large mixing bowl; add yeast. Let stand a few minutes then stir to dissolve. Add half of the flour, sugar, salt, shortening and egg. Beat with hand mixer 2 minutes at medium-speed until smooth. Add the remaining flour; stir in by hand about 1 1/2 minutes, until smooth. Cover bowl with waxed paper and let dough rise in warm place till doubled, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, grease 12 large muffin cups. Stir batter 20-25 strokes and spoon into muffin cups filling half full. Let rise in warm place until batter reaches top, about 20-30 minutes. Bake 10-15 minutes in hot (425 degree) oven. Remove from pan and cool on racks. Best when eaten right out of the oven and they are so light!
