    1 pound sauerkraut
    1 large onion, sliced
    2 apples, sliced
    2 tablespoons butter
    1 teaspoon juniper berries
    1 teaspoon caraway seeds
    1-2 raw potatoes, grated
    11⁄2 cups water or sweet cider
    1 teaspoon dark brown sugar
    Salt, to taste

    Recipe



    Rinse sauerkraut in warm water; drain.

    Saute the apples and onion in butter until soft. Add caraway, juniper berries, sugar and sauerkraut. Simmer, covered, for 30 minutes. Add more sugar to taste if desired.

    Add grated potato, water or cider and salt. Continue cooking until sauerkraut is tender.

    Serve with baked or boiled potatoes and yellow split pea puree.
