Modified from recipe submitted by Ellen Warfield at allrecipes.com

    List of Ingredients

    • 6 slices day-old bread
    • 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
    • 1/2 c. raisins (optional)
    • 4 eggs, beaten
    • 2 c. milk (or light cream)
    • 3/4 c. white sugar
    • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
    • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

    Instructions

    1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.

    2. Break bread into small pieces in an 8" squar baking dish. Drizzle melted butter or margarine over bread. If desired, sprinkle with raisins.

    3. In medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk or cream, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Beat until well mixed. Pour over bread, and lightly push down with a fork until bread is covered and soaking up the egg mixture.

    4. Place pan in larger pan and add water to large pan up to 1". Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until the top springs back when lightly tapped.

    5. Serves 12.

    Final Comments

May be doubled, but a larger pan will need to be cooked longer.
