    Recipe Introduction

On March 27, 1912, 1st Lady Taft planted a cherry tree on the bank of the Tidal Basin. This was the beginning of Washington D.C.'s famous Cherry Blossom Festival. 3,020 trees were planted over the next 7 years - grafted from trees on the bank of the Arakawa River in Adachi Ward (a suburb of Tokyo). This gift from Japan has come to symbolize the U.S. capital. Thousands of visitors travel there each spring to see them in bloom
