    My friends called these "Mary DeGarmo Cookies."

    List of Ingredients




    Cookies
    ½ cup shortening
    2 cups brown sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp vanilla
    3 ½ cups flour
    ½ tsp salt
    1 tsp soda
    1 tsp cream of tartar

    Recipe



    Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Add sifted dry ingredients, mix well. Form into roll 1 ½” in diameter, wrap and chill thoroughly. Cut into thin (1/4”) slices and arrange half the slices on a greased cookie sheet. Place 1 tsp Date Filling (recipe below) on each, top with remaining slices and press edges together. Bake 10 minutes at 350°. Makes 5 dozen.

    Date Filling: chop 1 lb pitted dates, add ½ cup brown sugar and ½ cup water. Cook until thick; add ½ cup pecans.
