    also known as "Mary DeGarmo Cookies"

    List of Ingredients




    Cookie:
    1/2 cup shortening
    2 cups brown sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp vanilla
    3 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 tsp soda
    1 tsp cream of tartar
    Date filling:
    1 lb pitted dates, chopped
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup water
    1/2 cup pecans

    Recipe



    Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix well. Form in roll 1 1/2" in diameter, wrap and chill thoroughly. Slice and arrange half of slices on greased cookie sheet. Place 1 tsp date filling on each and top with remaining slices, pressing edges together. Bake at 350 degrees 10 minutes.
    Makes 5 doz.

    Filling: Mix dates, sugar and water and cook until thick. Add pecans.
