    Recipe Introduction

When children return from church on Christmas day in New Mexico, these anise-flavored sugar cookies, shaped like fleurs-de-lis (stylized irises), are given to them as a special holiday treat.

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 cup butter or margarine
    • 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon anise seed, finely crushed, or several drops anise flavoring
    • 1 egg
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 tablespoon brandy or milk
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on high speed for 30 seconds. Add about half of the flour, the anise seed, egg, sugar, brandy or milk, baking powder, vanilla, and salt. Beat until thoroughly combined. Beat in remaining flour. Divide dough in half. Cover and chill for 3 hours.
    2. On a lightly floured surface, roll half of the dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with a fleur-de-lis-shape cookie cutter (or other desired shape). Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
    3. If desired, combine the 2 tablespoons sugar with the cinnamon. Sprinkle sugar or sugar-cinnamon mixture lightly onto cookies. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 6 to 8 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are very lightly browned. Cool cookies on a wire rack.

    Final Comments

    Makes 36 to 48 cookies.
