    List of Ingredients


    • 2 T. butter
    • 4 onions, sliced
    • 3 c. beef broth
    • 1-1/2 c. water
    • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/4 t. pepper
    • 1/8 t. dried thyme
    • Optional: 1 T. sherry
    • 1 c. French bread, cubed and toasted
    • 1/2 c. Gruyere cheese, shredded


    Instructions


    1. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat.
    2. Add onions; cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    3. Add broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, thyme and sherry, if using. Increase heat; bring to a boil.
    4. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.
    5. Divide into 4 oven-safe soup bowls; top with bread cubes, then cheese. Place under a broiler just until cheese melts.
