    With cold and flu season here, I have found this to be a tried and true remedy. I will be honest, this looks kind of yuck after you put it in the blender. Happily, though, it will make you feel so much better you won't care. Sometimes I freeze extra, so when I have a head cold or sinus infection, I have it ready. This will clear out your nasal passages and ease congestion.

    When you add the garlic, add the cloves whole. They will soften, and everything gets thrown in the blender. I prefer to use cayenne pepper, and add it to the mug just before drinking the soup. That way you can adjust the taste with each bowl.

    Chicken Soup for the Cold

    2 quarts of chicken broth (canned or homemade stock)
    2 large heads of garlic, peel all cloves – you should have at least 40
    ¼ cup each of cilantro and parsley, snipped finely
    2 teaspoons lemon pepper
    2 teaspoons fresh mint leaves finely snipped
    2 Tablespoons fresh basil, finely snipped
    2 teaspoons curry powder
    2 cups carrots, sliced
    red pepper flakes or cayenne powder to taste (careful!)

    Combine all ingredients except red pepper or cayenne. Bring to a boil and cook until carrots are tender. (If your head is congested, stand somewhere in the vicinity of the “fumes”.) Remove from heat, and puree in a blender. Reheat soup, before serving, sprinkle with red pepper or cayenne, starting with small amounts until it is as spicy as tolerable. It may not have a real pleasing appearance, but you will definitely breath through open air passages! Supposedly this soup was developed by a physician.
