    List of Ingredients

    2 unbaked pie crusts
1 small jar strawberry jam (or flavor preferred)
    1 egg
    1 tbs. water
    2 tbs. melted butter
    Colored sugar crystals, optional

    Recipe

If using homemade pie dough, divide in half and roll out one of the pie crusts to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into round or square shapes. Do the same for the other half making sure you have equal amounts of tops and bottoms. Beat egg and water together to make an egg wash. Brush egg wash around edges of the cut outs being used for the bottom layer. Spread a layer of jam in the center of each bottom crust; spreading just to edge of eggwash. Then place tops on ; pinch with fingers or crimp with fork to seal. Then pierce tops with fork or sharp knife to vent. Brush on a thin layer of butter and sprinkle with colored sugar or plain sugar if desired. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. If planning to toast, be sure not to let them brown much. Let cool completely and individually wrap in foil or plastic wrap. Can freeze and pop in toaster oven or microwave to warm when ready to eat. Makes 5 - 10 pop tarts depending on size of cut outs made.
