    1 cup butter, softened
    2 cups sugar
    3 large eggs
    2 tsp vanilla
    3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
    2 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    Powdered Sugar Icing
    2 cups confectioners' sugar
    1/4 cup water
    1/4 tsp vanilla extract
    Food Coloring (optional)

    Beat butter until soft and creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs and vanilla, beating well.

    Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, mixing well. Cover and chill for 1 hour.

    Preheat oven to 350°. Grease cookie sheets. Divide dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll 1 portion of dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with various size of heart shaped cookie cutters (or cutters of your choice). Place on prepared cookie sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugar, if desired. Repeat with remaining dough.

    Bake 10 minutes. Allow to cool for 2 minutes on cookie sheets. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Once cool, decorate with icing and colored sugars, if desired.

    To make icing, whisk together all icing ingredients in a small bowl. Add food coloring if desired.
