    This is my Mom's recipe


    List of Ingredients


    • 1 lb small white navy beans (about 2 cups_
    • 2 onions, sliced
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 1 t salt
    • 1/4 t pepper
    • ham bone and leftover baked ham
    • 2 c catsup
    • 2 c light brown sugar
    • 1/3 c vinegar
    • 2-3 T Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 T dry mustard


    Instructions


    1. Day before serving: Soak beans in cold water, covered, overnight (water should cover beans completely).
    2. Next day: Drain beans in colander; rinse under cold water. Turn into 6-quart pot. Cover with 5 cups water. Add onion, bay leaves, salt, pepper, ham bone and leftover ham.
    3. Bring to bioling; reduce heat and simmer 1 hour or until beans are tender; add more water as needed. Remove ham bone and bay leaves.
    4. To bake: Preheat over to 350 degrees. Drain bean mixture, reserving liquid. Turn beans into 4-quart baking dish or Dutch oven. Combine catsup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, and mustard; mix well. Pour over beans; stir to combine. Add enough reserve liquid to cover beans.
    5. Bake, covered, 3 hours.


    Final Comments


    Makes 8-10 servings.
