    Appliqued Star Sugar Cookies

    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup butter, softened
    • 3/4 cup sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 2 3/4 cups flour
    • 1 tsp. baking soda
    • 1 tsp. cream of tartar


    Instructions


    1. In a large bowl, crean the butter and sugar until fluffy.

    2. Add the egg and beat well, then mix in the vanilla.

    3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.

    4. add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, one third at a time, until thoroughly combined.

    5. Divide dough into three bowls. Add liquid or paste food coloring drop by drop, into the dough until it reaches desired color.

    6. Cover each disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours, or until the dough is firm enough to work with. If it becomes too firm, soften at room temperature for about 5 minutes.

    7. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured board, roll out the one ball of colored dough until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Cut a large star using the largest star cookie cutter. Place it on the cookie sheet. Roll out another colored ball of dough. Cut star using the next largest cookie cutter. Insert cookie inside largest star cookie. Roll last ball of dough. Cut using the smallest cookie cutter. Place inside cookie.

    8. Gently pinch the seams between the doughs so the won't separate during baking.

    9. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Place on rack and cool for 2-3 minutes.
