    SPIDER CORN CAKE

    List of Ingredients

    PIDER CORN CAKE

Don't know if this is what you are looking for- my grandmother made similar this. It's an old recipe and sounds like yours. The second recipe is just a bit different but
    prepared essentially the same.

Butter or grease for the spider*
    3 eggs
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup milk
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in 1 cup buttermilk
    1 tsp salt
    1 2/3 cups cornmeal
    1/3 cup flour
    Additional 1 cup milk

    * a spider is a heavy pan with "legs" that was used for fireplace baking/cooking- but any heavy duty cast iron skillet/oven proof pan would do.
Beat eggs and sugar well. Mix together and add: milk, buttermilk mixture and salt and blend well. Combine cornmeal and flour and add to combined mixture.Pour mixture
into hot spider pan ( first place spider on hot stove burner and place about 2 Tbs grease in it and till to coat sides of pan well.).Pour over mixture 1 cup milk ( do not stir in ).
Place spider pan in hot oven and bake about 20 to 30 minutes. I have no temperature written down but would guess oven heat from 350 to 375F.
When done there should be a streak of custard throughout.
