    Snappy Molasses Crinkles

    2 1/4 cups flour
    1 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
    1 tsp ground ginger
    1/2 tsp ground cloves
    1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
    3/4 cup shortening
    1/4 cup molasses
    1 large egg
    granulated sugar

    On a sheet of waxed paper, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and 1/8 tsp salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, using a wooden spoon, beat the brown sugar with the shortening, molasses, and the egg until well blended. Stir in the flour mixture. Cover and refrigerate for one hour. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Shape the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Roll in the granulated sugar. Place 3 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the tops have cracked.
    Makes about 4 dozen
