Recipe Introduction
This was a family recipe often prepared by a career U.S. Navy chef for such dignitaries as President Harry S. Truman. Through the chef�s military career, he refused to share his recipe. Finally, when he retired, he allowed it to be published in a Navy newspaper.

� Cup Butter
2 Cups Sugar
2 Teaspoons Vanilla
3 Eggs
3 Tablespoons Flour
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1 Cup Buttermilk
1 Single-crust Pie Shell (9-inch) unbaked
� Cup Chopped Pecans
Recipe
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
In a large mixer bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, adding � cup sugar at a time. Cream until mixture no longer feels grainy. Blend in vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
In a separate bowl, combine flour and salt. Add flour mixture to butter mixture, a little at a time. Blend in buttermilk to finish the custard.
Sprinkle pecans in bottom of crust; pour custard mixture over pecans and bake 1 hour 30 minutes. Best served at room temperature.
