    2 eggs -- well beaten
    1 Cup sugar
    2 Tsps shortening
    3/4 Cup buttermilk
    1 Tsp vanilla
    3 1/2 Cups flour
    2 Tsps baking powder
    1 Tsp baking soda
    1/2 Tsp salt
    1/4 Tsp nutmeg

    Recipe



    In a large bowl thoroughly blend beaten eggs --
    sugar, shortening,
    buttermilk, and vanilla. Sift together
    the remaining dry ingredients. Stir into
    buttermilk mixture, mixing well.

    Dough will be sticky. On a floured surface, knead dough 6 times. Roll
    out
    to 1/3 inch thick. Let Dough rest 20 minutes. Cut with a floured 3
    inch
    doughnut cutter.

    Fill heavy skillet to a third of its depth with meltedshortening. Heat
    to
    375*. Fry doughnuts a few at a time- about 3 minutes-turning once.
    Drain
    on paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, frost or glaze. Serve
    warm.
