Spicy Red Cabbage with Apples

1 quart red cabbage (1 lb) -- shredded
2 tart cooking apples -- peeled and sliced
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup sugar
4 whole cloves
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
In medium saucepan, combine all ingredients with 1/2 cup water. Cook, covered, over medium heat until cabbage is tender -- about 25 minutes; stir occasionally.
Judi's notes: Start checking cabbage after 16 minutes for doneness. Twenty five minutes may be a little too long to cook this dish.
