Mama's Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie

List of Ingredients

1 cup sugar
3 Tablespoons cocoa
3 Tablespoons cornstarch
3 egg yolks
2 cups milk
2 Tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla


Recipe

Blend sugar with cornstarch and cocoa with a large mixing spoon or wire whisk. Blend very well eliminating all lumps in the cornstarch. Add a small amount of milk (1/2 cup or so) and blend well. Add one egg yolk and beat the mixture well by hand with spoon. Add each additional egg yolk, separately and beat well. Once all the egg yolks are well blended in the mixture, add the remaining milk and blend thoroughly. Cook on stovetop on medium heat stirring constantly to avoid sticking. Once the mixture has thickened, remove from heat and add butter and vanilla. Stir well. Pour into pre-baked pie shell. Top with meringue.
