Soups, stews, chowders....I just love them....and could eat some every single day of the year. I don't care if it's hot and humid or freezing cold...I love soups, stews and chowders. The term soup derives from "sop," a piece of bread upon which broth was poured; a primordial crouton shall we say. Eventually it became vogue to serve the broth sans bread. The word soup entered the English language in the 17th century, prior to that it was known as broth or pottage. By the 18th century soup had established its role as a quintessential first course.
