    * 3/4 cup shortening
    * 1 cup brown sugar
    * 1/4 cup molasses
    * 1 egg
    * 2 1/4 cups flour
    * 2 teaspoons baking soda
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    * 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    * 1/2 teaspoon cloves
    * Granulated sugar for rolling

    Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease baking sheets.
    Cream shortening, brown sugar and molasses. Add egg. Mix until fluffy. Sift dry ingredients into a bowl. Add to creamed mixture. Form dough into 1" balls. Roll in granulated sugar. Arrange on baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes or until cookies are slightly cracked. Cool briefly on baking sheets then transfer to racks to cool completely. Store in an air-tight container. Makes 3 to 4 dozen cookies.
