These walnuts make a great take-away for party guests. They're easy to package in small bags tied up with pretty ribbon. Enjoy them sprinkled on salads, French toast or oatmeal.
4 cups shelled walnuts
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1/3 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon chile powder or 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
3 tablespoons turbinado sugar

Whole Foods Maple Sugar Walnuts
Preheat oven to 250°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine butter, syrup, water, salt, cinnamon and chili powder in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Mix in walnuts and stir to evenly coat. Spread nuts in a single layer on baking sheet. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake 45 minutes to an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on waxed or parchment paper to cool. Store in an airtight container or package for gift giving.
Makes 4 cups of walnuts or enough for 2 or 4 gifts
