Recipe Introduction
a very old favorite, a real child pleaser (if you can get'em to wait!) This is a very old fashioned method for making one of the oldest child pleasing treats ever. You owe it to your children to make it at least once!
Take a quart jar or larger. Fill it with warm water to within an inch from the top. Dissolve in it as much sugar as you can, making a honey like consistency of the mixture. Tie a piece of clean small string around the middle of a pencil and cut its length so that it will just clear the bottom of the jar when the pencil is laid across the top of the jar. Place the pencil across the top with the string immersed in the liquid. allow to sit undisturbed for 5 to 6 weeks, during which time, sugar crystals will have built up along the string's length.
When the crystals are large, but not too large to be removed from the jar, remove and replace with another string. Kids love the crunch and sweetness, and the uniqueness of this old time candy treat!
