List of Ingredients
The Thanksgiving tradition began in 1621 after European settlers, or Pilgrims, endured a very difficult and dangerous first year in the New World. With help from the Native Americans, the Pilgrims' October harvest turned out to be very plentiful. Corn, fruits, and many kinds of vegetables were stored for the upcoming winter, along with cured fish and meats.
To celebrate the successful harvest, William Bradford, governor of the Pilgrims, proclaimed a day of "thanksgiving" to be shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. A three-day feast followed, filled with food, games and music.
Throughout the years, the tradition of an annually celebrated thanksgiving feast held after the harvest continued. In the late 1770's, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress suggested a day of national thanksgiving.
In 1817, the state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom. Many other states followed this example. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of Thanksgiving. Also, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Thanskgiving would be on the fourth Thursday each November.
