    1 cup butter, softened
    1-1/4 cups powdered sugar
    1 egg
    2 tsp. cherry extract
    2-1/2 cups flour
    1 tsp. cream of tartar
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. salt

    Recipe



    To make the dough: In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until fluffy. Stir in egg and extract. Mix together dry ingredients and stir into butter mixture. Wrap and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

    Giant Heart Cookie: Preheat oven to 375°F. Roll out one-quarter of the dough on a lightly floured board 1/4-inch thick. Take an 8 1/2-by-11-inch piece of paper and fold it in half. Draw half of a heart on one side of the cutout (see diagram). Unfold to make a whole heart. Use the paper as a guide to cut a heart shape out of the dough. Carefully put dough heart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining three-quarters of the dough, then gather up the scraps of dough and reroll to make one or two additional cookies. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes. Let cool completely, then decorate with frosting. Makes about 5 to 6 giant heart cookies.
