Healthy Trash
When I make Trash, I make a BIG batch. It never lasts. I try to take several bags when we visit the kids. It's always gone within a week--a sign that we should be, too.
List of Ingredients
- 1 box Cheerios
- 2 boxes Chex (one is always Wheat Chex)
- 1 bag pretzel sticks
- 1 box reduced-fat cheese crackers
- 1 can onion rings
- 1 jar low-fat, low-salt peanuts (or home-roasted)
- 1 1/2 cups sunflower seeds
- 1/2 c. Worcesterhire sauce
- 4-5 shakes hot sauce (Tabasco, for example)
- 2 tablespoons seasoned salt (mine or Tony Cachere's)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- cayenne to taste (opt.)
- 1 stick low-fat margarine (usually Promise, not fat-free)
Instructions
- Melt margarine in microwave in 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Add Worcestershire and remaining seasonings.
- Place cereals and remaining nibbles in a kitchen-size CLEAN garbage bag. Pour sauce over nibbles as you gently turn the bag back and forth. (Be careful to hold the top tight.)
- Microwave method: Cook in batches of 6 cups in a large microsafe bowl for 5-6 minutes on HIGH, stirring every 2 minutes.
- Oven Method: Work in 2-quart batches in large baking pans. I use top and bottom of a large square roaster, placing one in my top double oven and one in the bottom. Bake at 250 degrees about one hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Switch pans from top to bottom half-way during cooking time. Repeat as needed.
- Pour finished mix into large brown paper grocery bag--CLEAN, of course. Let bag absorb extra oil. Let cool, gently shaking every so often.
- Store in tightly closed containers or plastic bags.
Final Comments
I'd rather do one big batch at once than several small ones at different times. This recipe makes about 30 cups of Trash at .4 grams of fat per cup.
Optional additions: smoked almonds, cashews, pecans, other small crackers, finger-food sized cereals, a sweet corn cereal.
