Mamma's Spoonbread

Or Spoon Bread, as the case may be. Whatever, this came from her friend Miss Elsie Hoyt.





List of Ingredients



• 1 cup cornmeal
  
• 1 teaspoon salt
  
• 1 tablespoon sugar
  
• 1 tablespoon Crisco
  
• 1 cup boiling water
  
• 1 egg
  
• 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
  
• 1 cup milk
  






Instructions



1. Pour the boiling water over the cornmeal, salt, sugar and Crisco; let cool.
   
2. To the cooled mixture, add remaining ingredients. Place in a buttered baking dish.
   
3. Bake about 45 minutes in a moderate oven (350 degrees).
   






Final Comments


Spoon bread is sort of a southern custard. It's a cross between cornbread and creamed corn, only better.
