Mom's Applesauce
I confess that I've not served much applesauce over the years. When the kids were little, they'd have it, but it was not a usual choice for regular family fare. Now I've started serving it again. Homemade is definitely best.
List of Ingredients
- 1/4 bushel mixed tart apples (Cortlands, Jonathons, Fuji, Gala, Braeburns, Granny Smiths, etc.)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (or more to taste)
- nutmeg, ginger, allspice, etc. to taste
- water as needed
Instructions
- Quarter and core apples. Simmer apples in a large stainless steel pot until soft. Add water 1/2 cup at a time to keep apples from sticking. Run through food mill. Season with sugar and spices to taste.
Final Comments
Mom always liked to use 3-4 different kinds of apples. The tart firm apples are best.
You may wish to peel the apples to begin with and then mash with a potato masher leaving sauce fairly chunky. This seasoned sauce makes good pies, cakes, crisps or cobblers.
