My Barbecue Sauce
The first year we were married--nearly forty years ago--I found this recipe in an old Metropolitan Insurance Company cookbook. I use it both for grilling meat and cooking BBQ pork on the stovetop.
List of Ingredients
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup catsup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- pinch cayenne
Instructions
- Saute onion in butter. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer about a half hour.
Final Comments
For hamburger barbecue, brown meat and make sauce directly in pan. Serve on toasted buns.
For ribs, bake uncovered in 350 degree oven for 3/4 hour. Place on prepared grill. Brush with sauce. Grill until tender. Do not allow to char.
For barbecue pork, brown a pork shoulder in a little oil in a Dutch oven. Add 1 cup water. Simmer several hours until meat falls from bone. Remove to shallow pan. Remove bone and shred meat. Meanwhile, make BBQ sauce with pan drippings. Return meat to pan. Heat until sauce reaches desired consistency. Serve on toasted buns.
For chicken, treat as ribs or BBQ pork above.
