1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs -- lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup pre-sweetened instant cocoa
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
Powdered sugar
Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Sift together flour, salt and baking powder; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating well. Spoon 1/3 of batter into well-greased 6-1/2 inch ring mold or 9x9x2-inch baking pan. Mix the cocoa and chopped nuts; sprinkle half over batter in pan. Repeat layers, ending with batter. Bake at 350 F. for 35 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes in pan; then turn out of mold. Serve warm, sprinkled with powdered sugar, if desired.
