Pepper Burgers
Firemen everywhere join the army of America is devoted to the hamburger. They may spice it with seasonings; serve it with onions, pickles, or tomatoes; add cheese, chili, or lettuce; grill it, pan-fry it, or bake it. It's an American food habit....it's a "burger". The recipe here uses Italian sausage and sweet roasted peppers.
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion
1/2 pound hot Italian sausage
4 tablespoons sweet roasted peppers
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 egg
MSG to taste (optional)
1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet (brown gravy base)
1 cup bread crumbs (plain or seasoned)
Salt and pepper to taste
3 to 4 tablespoons cooking oil
6 slices American cheese
6 hamburger buns
Preheat the broiler. Chop the onions and sweet peppers. Combine ground beef, onions, and sausage meat. Add the roasted sweet peppers, crushed garlic, eggs, MSG, and Kitchen Bouquet. (This last may be brushed on after patties are formed.)
Add bread crumbs to obtain the right consistency for meat patties (about half of the amount specified), and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and form into patties 3/4-inch thick. Roll the patties in the remaining bread crumbs and fry slowly in cooking oil, turning until browned on both sides and cooked through.
Remove to shallow baking pan. Top each patty with a cheese slice and place under broiler until cheese melts. Serve on hamburger buns with any additional garnish you like.
Yields: 6 patties
Note: I used Provolone cheese on mine....very good!
