Beef Chow Mein
1-1/2 pounds round steak
1-1/2 tablespoons cooking oil
1-1/2 cups coarsely chopped onions
1-1/2 cups water
1 boullion cube
1/2 cup chopped green peppers
1-1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 No. 2 can bean sprouts
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water
Salt and pepper to taste
Rice or chow mein noodles
Trim the steak and cut it into bite-size pieces. Fry the meat quickly in oil over high heat until it is browned. Then add the onions and continue cooking until onions are almost done, about 5 minutes. Dissolve the bouillon cube in hot water. Add the green peppers, soy sauce, bouillon, brown sugar and bean sprouts to the meat and onions.
Bring to boiling point and stir in cornstarch, already dissolved in a few tablespoons of water. Salt and pepper to taste and cook, uncovered, over medium heat, stirring occasionally until mixture thickens. Serve over rice or chow mein noodles.
