List of Ingredients
1 c pitted, finely cut dates
1 c sugar, divided
1/2 c evaporated milk
1 c sifted flour
1 1/4 c rolled oats
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 c melted shortening
Recipe
Combine dates, 1/2 c sugar and evaporated milk in a saucepan.
Cook until thick, stirring constantly.
remove from heat and cool.
Mix together flour, oats, 1/2 c sugar, cinnamon, salt, baking soda and shortening.
Press half oat mixture in a greased 8 inch square pan.
Spread cooled date mixture over oats.
Cover with remaining oat mixture; press down with spoon or fingers.
Bake at 350 for 25 minutes or until golden.
Cut into 16 squares.
Notes:
Original recipe called for brown sugar.
I used old fashioned oatmeal and butter flavored shortening.
