Recipe Introduction
(Quote from the letter): "I am sending you a recipe for
old-fashioned syrup pie, which I think is in keeping with the
Centennial, as this recipe has been in our family we know for
over 100 years and in all the recipes I have seen, I have never
seen one exactly like this one. My grandmother brought it from
Kentucky. It is an old slave-time recipe and is indeed a good
pie."
List of Ingredients
3 c. dark or light syrup
1 c. sugar
8 whole eggs, well beaten
1 Tbsp. sifted flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
2 Tbsp. fresh butter
Recipe
Cook sugar and syrup together until it will flake from
spoon. Add the butter; remove from fire and pour slowly over
well beaten eggs and flour. Add vanilla and nutmeg. Pour into
unbaked pie shells and bake in a moderate oven until firm and
well done.
