    1/2 cup + 1 tbl. sugar, divided
    1 tablespoon cornstarch
    1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    4 cups peeled sliced fresh peaches
    1 teaspoon lemon juice
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 cup flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    3 tablespoons shortening
    1/2 cup milk

    Preheat oven to 400¼F. Mix 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch and nutmeg in 2-quart saucepan. Stir in peaches and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir for 1 minute. Pour into a 2-quart casserole dish. Stir together flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder and salt. Add shortening. Cut through with a fork until flour clings to shortening. Add milk. Form into a ball. Drop dough by 6 to 8 teaspoonfuls onto hot fruit. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired. Serves 6.
