    1/2 cup butter, softened
    1/2 cup shortening
    3/4 cup sugar
    3/4 cup brown sugar
    2 eggs
    1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    2 1/2 cups flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 cup sweetened coconut flakes
    1/2 cup toasted unsalted macadamia nuts, chopped

    Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets. Cream together butter and shortening with an electric mixer until light and smooth. Add sugar, brown sugar and cream until light. Beat in eggs, one at a time, and add vanilla. In another bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture and gently beat until flour disappears. Stir in coconut and macadamia nuts. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls, about 2 inches apart, on prepared baking sheets. Bake about 18 minutes, until edges are golden. Let sit 1 minute on sheets, then transfer to racks to cool
