    A variety of black eye beans - this is my mums recipe, you can use kokum instead of tamarind to contribute to the sour element in this preparation.

    List of Ingredients




    2 cups chowli beans (washed and soaked in water

    overnight)
    2 cups water
    1 level tsp. salt
    1/3 tsp. mustard seeds
    1 small onion, chopped
    7 curry leaves
    4 cloves garlic, chopped
    1/3 tsp. grated ginger
    1/3 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. coriander powder
    1/4 tsp. cumin powder
    2 tbsp. dry coconut
    1 tomato chopped
    a lump of jaggery
    2 tbsp tamarind pulp
    1 tbsp. chopped coriander

    Recipe



    In a pan, add soaked beans. salt & 2 cups water, bring to boil
    Simmer over low heat until cooked (between 40 - 60 minutes) Do not overcook them. In a separate pan, heat oil Add mustard seeds, and when they pop, add chopped onions, curry leaves, chopped garlic and grated ginger. When onions are light brown, add desiccated coconut, turmeric, coriander, cumin powders. Stir. Add tomatoes & jaggery, stir. Add cooked beans, tamarind pulp and mix well. Garnish with chopped coriander.
    Serve with rice, or chappatis
